Halo: The Fall of Reach, a book released a couple of weeks before the game as part of a huge promotional effort, details the destruction of the planet Reach, a human military stronghold. It’s the year 2552, and humanity has been at war with the Covenant - a theocratic collective of extra-terrestrial species - for about a quarter of a century. The time since has been filled by a side-story in Halo 3: ODST that focused on events parallel to its predecessor, as well as Halo: Reach, a prequel set just before the original Halo: Combat Evolved. It’s been so long since the Chief last suited up that all many gamers are likely to remember about him is that he’s a gruff-voiced guy in a motorcycle helmet with a grudge against colourful ETs.
